Airborne Herdenking Arnhem West

Since 2016 the commemoration has taken place annually on Nassau Square in the Lombok district in Arnhem at the monument ‘Remember September 1944’ on the Friday of the commemoration weekend of the Battle of Arnhem. During this ceremony, all British soldiers who were killed in combat actions and Arnhem civilians who lost their lives in West Arnhem during the Battle of Arnhem are commemorated.

This commemoration is organized by the Committee Airborne Commemoration Arnhem-West in close collaboration with the Montessori College Arnhem and the West Arnhemsche Muziekvereeniging.

The commemoration takes place at the memorial ‘Remember September 1944, which was unveiled by Major General Roy Urquhart, commander of the British 1st Airborne Division, in 1987. This monument was designed by the Arnhem goldsmith Ad van Wordragen, who used a brass plate for the commemorative plaque from the rubble of the St. Elisabeth’s Gasthuis, which was badly damaged during the fighting.

During the commemoration, which reflects on the sacrifices made in September 1944, a conscious connection is also made to the future, to the youth. Pupils from Montessori College Arnhem play a central role during the commemoration on Nassau Square. In this way they represent ‘The Bridge to the Future’ in all respects.
